In a recent survey, 58% of delinquent homeowners do not know that thier mortgage lenders may offer ways to help them keep their homes and 56% did not know that free counseling exists to help them. Additionally the survey found that most homeowners do not know the common ways their lenders can help them avoid foreclosure. The mortgage industry is working with the Homeownership Preservation Foundation to assist borrowers from defaulting on home loans. The Homeownership Preservation Foundation runs a free hotline to provide counseling for borrowers. The foundation receives about 4,000 calls daily from people in distress.
